Sustainable Development

The most common definition of sustainable development is that created by the Bruntland Commission of the United Nations, led by Gro Harley Bruntland, the former prime minister of Norway.

First introduced in 1980, and popularized in a 1987 report of the environment and economic development, the famous definition reads as follows:

“Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”
